Garden waste isn't the only thing you can put in your compost bin. For great compost think 50/50, half green (tea bags, vegetable peelings...) and half brown (cereal boxes, shredded paper...).

A water butt is also available, so you can have a ready source of water for your garden.

ACTION FOR STANNINGTON YOUNG VOLUNTEERS

A growing number of young people aged 11 to 17 are now taking part in the Action for Stannington activities.  They work alongside the adult volunteers and contribute to the enhancement of the local environment. The placement is arranged through local schools and Children & Young People's Directorate in Sheffield City Council.  The contribution of the young volunteers is vital, as they help bridge the gap between age groups, as well as ensuring that other kids in the area appreciate the importance of living in a pleasant neighbourhood.  You can call the Action for Stannington Enquiry Line on 07986 359969 to find out more.

It is now even easier to go green when choosing what to put on your tots bot. Sheffield City Council and Veolia have formed a new partnership with the Sheffield Real Nappy Network (SRNN) that will make using real nappies even more affordable for parents in Sheffield. They offer a £10 reduction when you spend at least £30 on any of the wide range of funky, fashionable and easy to use reusable nappies on offer from the voluntary advice group, SRNN.

Real easy
There is a range of nappy styles and designs to suit your lifestyle. On most designs you don’t even have to fold. It is simply a case of inserting a liner, an absorbent layer and covering with a waterproof cover to prevent leaks.

Real savings
You can save half of what you would spend on disposables if you choose to use reusable nappies. A baby can wear up to 5,000 nappies in the two years before the potty training begins. At around £8.00 for a pack of 40 disposables that adds up to nearly £870 in two years!

Real rubbish reduction
It is estimated that Sheffield produces 15,000 tonnes of nappy waste each year. If you are a family with one baby, more than half of your bin space can be taken up each week by junior’s disposables. Reusable nappies can help you to manage your waste.

If you don’t know where to start when it comes to choosing the right nappies for your baby, the advisors at SRNN will help you to make the right choice based on your lifestyle and your requirements. To find out more about the real nappy deal please call Veolia’s Recycling Helpline on:
0845 355 5515 and an advisor will contact you.

STANNINGTON IN BLOOM

"Stannington in Bloom" is the name of the campaign launched by Action for Stannington aimed at involving more residents in looking after the local area, by focusing on flower displays, planting of shrubs, repairing grass verges and generally enhancing the visual look of our village.

You do not need to be a keen gardener to contribute to "Stannington in Bloom", as community involvement is a crucial criteria to be met to win the award.  It is not your skills that are needed, it's your desire to take a pro-active approach towards social and environmental issues.

USE OF BIODIESEL in our vehicles

The Action for Stannington vehicles are partly powered by recycled vegetable oil turned into high quality biofuel.

By doing so we can cut carbon emissions while carrying out our environmental work in the neighbourhood.
